Combined Degrees

Some students elect to apply simultaneously for medical and other degrees. Here are the most common combinations:

MD-PhD

Students with a strong record of independent scientific research and a clear commitment to a career in medical research can apply for select fully-funded joint programs. These seven-eight year programs combine medical training with laboratory research and the completion of a graduate dissertation.

A few schools offer formal or informal fifth-year programs that enable MD candidates to develop research skills without pursuing a PhD.

A select few schools offer the joint degree with a doctorate in a non-science field.

MD-MPH

Students with a strong interest in public health often consider these five-year programs, offered at a number of medical schools. In many cases, it is possible to add the MPH component following matriculation in medical school.

MD-MBA

Students with an interest in hospital management or medical finance consider these programs.

MD-JD

Certain schools with both professional schools offer a combined degree in medicine and law. Read this article as an introduction to the concept.
