Anna Gunning is based in the UK working in international PR — an industry that combines international relations with business and creativity to help companies communicate effectively with the full range of key audiences from customers and shareholders to governments and regulators.
Her clients include both UK and international companies, many of whom have global operations and need to tackle a range of regional sensitivities and cultural issues in their various locations. Example projects include formulating and executing a strategy to help a company adapt to new UK environmental legislation, helping a company deal with a legal dispute in Russia, and working to increase a company’s profile in the Far East as it builds marketshare.
On a day-to-day basis there is a great deal of research and a great deal of writing — be it a formal research report for publication, a pithy press release, or an explanatory white paper. There is frequent contact with trade organizations, non-profits, government departments, and the European Commission, as well as with the media.
A native of the Chicago area, Anna majored in political science with a concentration in international relations and completed a Russian certificate. While at Williams she was a student representative on the Committee for Educational Policy, a tour guide for the admissions office, a cellist in the music department, and a coxswain on the Williams crew team. She studied abroad on the Williams Oxford Programme and did the Williams in Georgia Winter Study program. She moved to the UK after graduating and has been living there ever since.
