Beyond Studios, Washington, D.C.
This summer was full of excitement and learning opportunities during my internship with Beyond Studios in Washington, D.C. Working at the best musical and production studio in the nation’s capital allowed me to face challenges that led to me building numerous skills. Being involved in the business side of music, I gained professional experience and capitalized on the opportunity to expand my managerial skills. Working with the team at Beyond Studios, I learned how to create spreadsheets and displays for the company’s finances and present certain aspects of them to a team of professionals. I also learned how much work is involved in the music business when it comes to scheduling and managing a calendar. The studio is very busy, and it was my job to manage a very full calendar and help the business schedule recording artists effectively and efficiently. Through these responsibilities, I gained transferable skills which will serve me well in the future after my time at Williams. Additionally, the experience of working at Beyond Studios has provided me with valuable insight as to what it is like to work in the music business.
I was most excited about an individual project that I was able to create and execute for myself. Since I had access to the studio outside of business hours, I recruited local musicians and artists to meet at the studio so that I could executive produce my first record. This was a really exciting opportunity as I played the “QB” role to create a song from scratch and oversee the entire process. The song is not yet finished as it is still getting mixed and mastered, but everyone who participated was really excited about the experience and proud of the product that is being finalized.
I now know just how much hard work goes into running a studio like Beyond. While the experience unfortunately had to be remote due to the restrictions of the pandemic, I still felt that I was able to connect with the team and establish important professional relationships which I will be able to utilize as I establish a professional career —possibly on the management side of the music industry.
It goes without saying that this experience would not have been possible without the help of the ’68 Center for Career Exploration and the generosity of the Arts & Entertainment Internship Grant. I am very grateful to Martha Williamson ’77 and Peter Nelson ’76; because of their generous support, I have established important professional relationships and have gained significant management skills and experience from my work at Beyond Studios.
