Run the Moon, San Bruno, CA

Over the summer, I interned with the startup Run the Moon (RTM), a virtual race that relies on positive psychology
to challenge its participants physically and mentally to run 220 miles and to improve their mental wellbeing over the course of three months. My primary roles as an intern were content creation and marketing, but, as is the nature of a startup, I did a little bit of everything, and throughout the summer I was able to delve into other projects involving graphic design and even a podcast! For this internship, team collaboration was the largest component. Every day, I was in constant communication with the other interns over Zoom, phone calls, texting, and email. Even though each of us had our own roles and responsibilities, many of our day-to-day tasks overlapped, so collaboration was vital to get work done. And although remote isn’t the ideal setting to work as a team, my colleagues and supervisor, scattered over various time zones, made it work.

As an intern for Run the Moon, one of the projects I worked on was designing virtual badges to award the race participants, as well as a journal with activities that participants receive in the mail. Both of these projects were a rewarding experience because it was my first time using advanced editing software, so I had to learn as I went. Today, I can say that I am proud of the products I designed, and excited to share them with RTM participants. Furthermore, these projects are one example of team effort. Although I designed the journal, I relied on the research made by a colleague to guide its structure and content. Other projects that I worked on this summer included writing content for our website and editing a podcast where each week the RTM founder and CEO, Katherine Fischer ’08, interviews a participant to learn a bit more about their athletic journey, their goals and
aspirations, and favorite songs.

The most rewarding part of my internship was travelling to the Bay Area to meet and work in-person with my colleagues and supervisor; with all of us sharing the same space, we could work more efficiently and ask questions and help each other as needed. Perhaps the most exciting part of this trip was our weekend getaway to Yosemite National Park, where we hiked to the top of Yosemite Falls. Surrounded by grandiose redwoods covered in green moss and illuminated by the full moon, the hike to the top was intense but beautiful. And when I reached the top, the view of the millions of stars was breathtaking.

After this summer, I feel more confident in my skills as a team collaborator, a fast learner, and an adaptable human. The experience of working in a startup, and more specifically in marketing and content creation, has prepared me for similar work in the future, but also for other paths I may choose to take post-graduation. I am beyond thankful to the ’68 Center for Career Exploration and the Case Internship for Entrepreneurship for this out-of-this-world opportunity.
