Pre-Health Guide

The Health Professions Office is a source of counsel and support for students exploring interests in medicine, dentistry, public health, veterinary medicine, nursing, physical therapy, and other health-related fields.

Williams College students experience a rigorous preparation for all graduate training programs in the health professions. Successful applicants demonstrate excellence and proficiency in a variety of measures, including maturity, commitment to service, leadership, research and clinical experiences, and strength of character (e.g., hardships overcome, resilience).

Those students who have taken advantage of available curricular and extracurricular opportunities (either on- or off-campus), have consulted with the pre-health advisor, and have and met the high standards required for professional school admission are highly successful in gaining admission into the health professions and in the completion of their training. Each year about 55-60 students apply to medical, dental, and veterinary schools, with a matriculation rate of about 75-85%. In the 2017 applicant cohort, 55 applied to medical schools and 3 to dental schools.

Work on a professional school application begins in earnest about 18 months before the intended matriculation date. All potential applicants are urged to understand and follow the deadlines contained in the Application Timeline (linked below). You may email Barbara Fuller in the ’68 Center for Career Exploration Office of Health Professions with questions.
